i push both ways and count the hours

through many instruments
one breath
becomes prismatic,
first light through glass

a symphony of warring tones
scrolls across the sky
above coffee cup signs
and bathroom lines

people come from
these subways
into the gray and yellow world
like water without gravity,
dizzy dots
looking for each other

trusting in the flow
the spectacle of the city in flight
the graceful movement of throngs
down broadway
in a shuttered world they
have surrounded, climbing,
building, looking for a way in

this kind of sun, white yellow,
pulls with a mighty hand

its shadow is the water receding
before the wave
